2009 Season Review - Torrent Motorsports
World Series Ace
Tuesday, 19 January 2010 23:52

Torrent Motorsports made good progress in 2009 in the Ace division. After finishing 8th in the standings in 2007 and 10th in 2008, improvements were clearly needed. The 2009 season started strongly, the team was instantly competitive and it seemed they would fight with Twister and Roaldo for the Ace title.

The team scored their first ever Ace victory, with Shaun Stroud taking victory in Monaco. This would prove to be a turning point for Torrent, their season unfortunately going downhill afterwards. The points began to dry up as Kaasa and Kiriakopoulos took breaks from FSR, Bolier joined Roaldo Racing and Stroud failed to score a single point after his victory. In the middle of the season, the team signed Andrey Yakimenko who showed much promise, also Wes Richards was as consistent as ever and Florian Bekker showed flashes of good pace but the team couldn’t regain their early-season form.

Torrent ended the season in 4th in the standings, showing much improvement but still lacking the consistency to challenge for ultimate glory. If the lessons of 2009 are taken onboard, Torrent Motorsports should certainly be contenders for the World Series title in 2010.

Random Fact...

Torrent beat their 2008 points total after just 5 races in 2009.

Commentator's View...

Q: Torrent Motorsports started the season strongly, but seemed to fall back after Kaasa and Bolier left, is that how you saw it?
Nick Rowland: Very much so. I was also a part of Torrent in the early stages. Torrent will always hold a place in my heart as they were the team that brought me in to FSR thanks to Dave Carr-Smith. Just on that point Dave deserves massive praise for what he did a Torrent he was a true team member at Torrent and did a lot for the team. Torrent's demise came from the top and filtered down losing firstly Lee, then Sean to real life commitments, Petter, Timon. It was a great shame as Torrent are such a quality outfit. It's going to take some time to re-build but they'll bounce back. Best of luck to TMo in 2010.

Q: Nevertheless, it was TMo's best season by far in this division. Do you consider them to be World Series title contenders in 2010?
Nick Rowland: As long as they get the right drivers, Yes. Timon's already re-signed for TMo and that is a massive scalp for them as Timon is a quality driver and is really starting to prove what he can do. As long as Torrent start well, Torrent will succeed. Torrent have lost a lot of good drivers in the Winter and unfortunately that re-build process will be hard. I hope they bounce back quickly.
